The discovery and subsequent arrest was achieved after CyPol officers followed the man in his car in Xylophagou, within the Republic of Cyprus, towards the SBAs Pyla area.
After witnessing him stop his car before fleeing, CyPol officers contacted the SBA Police to carry out a search of the area with them in attendance.
Speaking this week, Chief Inspector Panicos Panayi from the SBA Police, said this was another great example of the two forces working together to ensure no one escapes justice.

 

 

He said: “We have a very close working relationship with our colleagues from CyPol and this is yet another example of that.

“There are times when known criminals cross jurisdictions and in those situations, it is very important that we are able to work together as one team to ensure the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.”

In an unrelated incident on March 2, a Cypriot man was arrested in Limassol after he crashed his car in Trachoni – within the SBAs – during a chase with CyPol.

The man, who was wanted by CyPol for several crimes, managed to evade capture until he crashed his car within Trachoni.

But despite fleeing on foot, after SBA Police officers seized his car, he was forced to go to the police station Akrotiri to check on its damage.

After being informed by the SBA Police that he faced charges in both the SBAs for dangerous driving and within the RoC on more serious charges, he subsequently handed himself in to CyPol in Limassol.

Chief Inspector Panayi explained: “CyPol had been in hot-pursuit of the man who had jumped three red lights and was driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid being caught.

“After driving into the SBAs he crashed his car into the pavement and escaped on foot. However, after he came to the police station to check on the status of his car, he agreed to hand himself into CyPol to answer his charges.”
